The Junior Clinical Investigator Program will be structured around milestones which must be completed to secure funding for each subsequent year.

The key components of the Junior Clinical Investigator Program include:

Year 1 Milestones

  • Participation in EVMS Research Bootcamp
  • Submission of a three (3) year mentoring and research plan in collaboration with appointed mentor(s)
  • Year 1 publication submission (literature review submitted)
  • Year 1 NIH K award and private foundation/professional society application submission
  • Annual progress report submitted to the Joint Research Operations Committee under the Joint Planning Commission
  • Development of a research project proposal in collaboration with mentor(s) for the duration of the program. Projects will be submitted to the Joint Research Operations Committee under the Joint Planning Commission to be evaluated according to:
    • Scholarly merit, investigational strategy, and overall quality of the proposed program or study design
    • Feasibility of applications to achieve goals within the anticipated timelines
    • Appropriateness of budget use; Consideration of facility, infrastructure, and equipment available and used for the project.
    • Funding strategy and potential of the investigator(s) to successfully obtain outside funding and/or publication and the impact on current or ongoing scientific investigations at the medical school and Sentara Healthcare.
    • Past productivity (i.e. publications, meeting presentations, invited talks, etc.) as presented in Biosketch.

Preference will be given to projects that outline:

  • Uniqueness to address a given need (i.e., improvements in care delivery, health disparities, etc.)
  • Innovation
  • Potential for academic return on investment
  • Leverage of existing resources
  • Interdepartmental collaboration

 Year 2 Milestones

  • Year 2 publication on original investigations data
  • Year 2 NIH K award application re-submission
  • Successful submission of a minimum of one (1) regional or national poster or presentation.
  • Annual progress report submitted to the Joint Research Operations Committee under the Joint Planning Commission

Year 3 Milestones

  • Year 3 publication on original investigations data
  • Year 3 NIH K award application re-submission (if applicable)
  • Intellectual properties filing if applicable
  • Successful submission of a minimum of one (1) regional or national poster or presentation.
  • Annual progress report submitted to the Joint Research Operations Committee under the Joint Planning Commission

In addition, successful applicants will be expected actively participate in the following programs:

  • Clinical Investigation Journal Club: Monthly meetings to discuss investigational methods of a selected journal article
  • Clinical Investigator Methods Workshop: Monthly workshops covering clinical investigational methods.
  • Academic Medicine Advisory Council: The council consists of faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students helping to devise the investigational direction at the school of medicine
  • Leadership Journal Club: Monthly meetings focusing on one aspect of developing leadership skills
