Abstract

Introduction: Rosacea is characterized by dysregulated inflammatory processes, leading to erythema, flushing, telangiectasia, and pustules on the face.2,3 There are four subtypes of rosacea; erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular2. Patients can present with characteristics of multiple subtypes and different areas of involvement over time3, making this condition difficult to treat. The purpose of this study was to utilize Reddit, an online forum, to evaluate patient's questions and experiences when using FDA approved medications for rosacea.

Methods: A medical student researcher used a search filter on r/Rosacea to screen for commonly prescribed FDA approved medications. The post was read in its entirety and then separated into its respective category.

Results: Nine medications were analyzed in this study. The most common categories were general experiences, followed by side effects, and then recommendations and how to use said medication.

Conclusion: Educating patients on topics such as usage instructions, potential side effects, and what to expect in terms of effectiveness can lead the patient to feel more confident in managing their conditions. Proper education also mitigates concerns about side effects and interactions, reduces misuse, and can improve adherence to treatment plans.
