Summer Scholars Program

The Summer Scholars Program is a mentored research internship offered by Brock VHS and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, Virginia.

Students chosen for the program will conduct a preselected research project, from start to finish, and present their project outcomes to the scientific community. Students are listed as co-investigators on their projects, which may be frequently published and presented on the national level. This summer experience includes didactic research training and personalized application in research design, implementation and publication.

Find more information about the program in the Summer Scholars Description access the Summer Scholars Application.

The application form and all supporting documentation for students must be submitted by Jan. 30, 2023.

Clinical Opportunities

Medical students who possess a strong interest in clinical research are often eager to gain practical experience. Working with clinical departments provides an excellent opportunity for medical students to gain firsthand experience in research

To work with these departments outside of the traditional academic year, medical students must be enlisted as a volunteer. This ensures that students are properly trained and prepared to work in a clinical setting and can adhere to the ethical standards and protocols required for individual research studies.

Clinical sites with active research studies:

              Strelitz Diabetes Center
               CONRAD
Virginia HIV/AIDS Resource and Consultation Center
Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center
               Other Clinical Trails

Community-Based Opportunities

These community-based research opportunities align with our commitment to addressing our community's challenges and needs.

These collaborative research projects, grounded in reciprocal partnerships that draw on the cultural wealth of both people and communities, lead to breakthroughs in disciplinary understanding and methods while addressing important public challenges.

Given that engaged scholarship differs from traditional assumptions about knowledge production as seen in traditional clinical studies, community-based research requires new kinds of infrastructure, professional networks, and intellectual exchange. As a result, community-based research offers a unique opportunity for medical students at EVMS to contribute to meaningful research projects that benefit both themselves and the communities they serve.

 Community-based research opportunities include:

Community Health and Research
Collaboratives
Community-Engaged Learning
