Legacy Studies
Legacy studies will remain under the oversight of the IRB that has already approved the study. If both IRBs have approved the study, the PI must contact one of the IRB offices for guidance on future reviews/oversight. The IRB’s decision will be the final decision as to oversight.
In addition, any study approved by either IRB will need the approval of that IRB to add location(s) from the other campus. (For example, a study approved by the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University IRB (legacy EVMS IRB) currently being conducted only at the Health Sciences campus will need an amendment submitted to add an ODU main campus location.)
New IRB Submissions (to be implemented on/before 1/1/2025)
For the short term, new submissions will continue following the existing process which is to submit to the campus IRB where the study will be conducted. The IRBs on both campuses will implement a new system of review that takes into consideration whether a study is Social-Behavioral (Main Campus IRB) or Biomedical/Clinical (Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University IRB). The assignment will be made by the IRB offices and those decisions will be final. This change will be implemented on or before January 1, 2025. A formal announcement will be made when this change is implemented. At that time, a guidance document indicating types of Social Behavioral and Biomedical studies will be available on each IRB website.
Sentara Studies
All studies involving Sentara Health (patients, investigators, data and/or facilities) must continue to be submitted to the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University IRB, regardless of the type of study.
Electronic Submissions
Please keep in mind that the two campuses use different IRB software programs and submissions cannot be transferred between the two programs. It is critical that investigators who are unsure of how their project may be designated should consult with their IRB office prior to submission so that it will not be necessary to re-submit the study in a different system. Re-submissions are the responsibility of the investigative site.
Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University Faculty, Staff and Trainees
In keeping with prior practice, the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University IRB faculty, staff and trainees must continue to submit to the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University IRB office for determinations of Not Research or Not Human Subject Research. Medical students must still be approved by Medical Student Research prior to submission to either IRB.
