Wellness workshop: How organizational culture impacts well-being
On Thursday, Dec. 14, from noon to 1 p.m., as part of the Waldholtz Family Wellness Series, the virtual workshop “Organizational Strategies for Professional Wellbeing,” will be presented by Alicia Kowalski, MD, Professor, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. After attending the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of burnout
- Identify the key factors of a Culture of Wellness
- Determine strategies to create and promote a Culture of Wellness

Dr. Kowalski graduated from St. John’s School, Rice University, UT Houston Medical School and completed residency at UT Houston in Anesthesiology. She is a Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine, and an Adjunct Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, Center for Professionalism.
Additionally, Dr. Kowalski has certification from Stanford as a Chief Wellness Officer, certification from Harvard in completing the Women in Medicine Leadership Training and certification from Rice University in completing the Coaching Training accredited through ICF.
Aside from clinical care, her passion lies in professional engagement and career sustainability for those in healthcare. Dr. Kowalski founded and chairs a national symposium, Burnout to Brilliance, a CME for Physician Wellbeing and Career Sustainability. In her free time, she enjoys doing artwork, and was the 2019 Physician Spokesperson for The Arts of Healing.
This event is supported by the Waldholtz Family Wellness Fund, which was established by the family of Bruce Waldholtz, MD, Rector of the EVMS Board of Visitors and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, and his wife, Baila Waldholtz, a member of the EVMS Deliver on the Promise Campaign Steering Committee. The Waldholtz Family Wellness Series provides the EVMS community with an opportunity to learn about new and innovative approaches regarding wellness in an effort to reduce stress and burnout, as well as to promote a culture of wellness.
