High school students from Chesapeake, Northampton and Portsmouth arrived on campus July 15 to learn about a broad spectrum of careers in medicine through the EVMS Health Sciences Academy.

The two-week, tuition-free program includes lectures, workshops and hands-on activities at both Old Dominion University and Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University.

The participants will spend two weeks interacting with physicians and other healthcare professionals through group-shadowing experiences.

Among the topics they will cover are human anatomy, suturing, ultrasound, art therapy, dentistry, sports medicine, nursing, public health, speech pathology and audiology.

This year’s program will run from July 15 to July 26. Upon completion, each student will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

Since its inception in 2019, this program has been free for students thanks to the generosity of many donors including the Beazley Foundation, Kurt McCammon, MD, Devine Chair in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery and Professor of Urology, and Carol McCammon, MD, MPH (MPH '12), Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine; PNC Bank; The John and Harriet Malbon Family Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation; and the Southeast Virginia Community Foundation.
