New leadership in Fine Family Academy of Educators
The Fine Family Academy of Educators recently announced changes in leadership beginning Sept. 1.
Judith Taylor-Fishwick, MSc, Director of Professional Development, was appointed Director of the FFAOE. She assumes the role following the departure of Elza Mylona, PhD, MBA, who has served as the inaugural Director of the academy since 2018.
Alice Roberts, MD, PhD, the Antoinette F. Hood, MD Endowed Professor of Dermatology and Assistant Professor of Pathology and Anatomy, was appointed as the academy’s Assistant Director. In this role, Dr. Roberts will oversee the application process for potential new academy members and serve as an internal reviewer. She also will assist in coordinating programming and some of the day-to-day FFAOE operations.
“Both Mrs. Taylor-Fishwick and Dr. Roberts have commitment and passion for educational excellence and scholarship,” Dr. Mylona says. “I am confident they will lead the academy to new heights.”
Mrs. Taylor-Fishwick served on the EVMS Academy of Educators Task Force which researched potential academy models that aligned with EVMS’ institutional culture. She was later instrumental in establishing a peer-review process for FFAOE applicants to be selected by national experts of other institutional academies to provide credibility and national recognition for EVMS FFAOE members and their work.
Mrs. Taylor-Fishwick joined EVMS in 2015 as a Clinical Project Manager with CONRAD and was appointed to her current role with EVMS Faculty Affairs and Professional Development in 2018. She has extensive experience in health education and instructional design both in the United States and the United Kingdom, and has served as Primary Investigator on numerous health-education focused grants. Most recently, she was awarded $30,000 from the American Medical Association’s 2022 Accelerating Change in Medical Education Innovation Program for her proposal “Cultural Humility: Providing Context and Application to the Learning Environment.”
Dr. Roberts joined EVMS in 2019 as Clinical Lab Director, Director of Dermatopathology and Assistant Professor of EVMS Dermatology. She earned her doctorates in philosophy and medicine from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, completed her residency in anatomic pathology/clinical pathology and fellowships in surgical pathology and dermatopathology at the UCLA School of Medicine.
Dr. Roberts decided to join academic medicine because of her passion for teaching. She was inducted as a member of the FFAOE in 2021.
The Fine Family Academy of Educators was established through a generous gift from the Fine Family in 2018 to recognize and elevate the status of healthcare educators who have made outstanding contributions to the EVMS community through sustained excellence in teaching, curriculum innovation, scholarship and educational leadership. A professional learning community in ongoing pursuit of educational excellence and scholarship, The Fine Family Academy of Educators is highly regarded in advancing educators — and education — both locally and nationally.
