EVMS staff member raises funds for melanoma research
When Nicole Pellegrino participates in the 50th Annual Yuengling Shamrock Marathon in March, she’ll be running to help increase awareness of melanoma.
Ms. Pellegrino, the Capital Campaign Manager at EVMS, is part of a dedicated team of runners and walkers raising funds for EVMS research, education and clinical care initiatives. This year, each participant has chosen a special fundraising cause that’s close to their heart.
For Ms. Pellegrino, also an ambassador for the local shoe store Running Etc., melanoma was a natural cause to champion.
“We live in an active area with many local races and outdoor sports, exposing ourselves to the sun's damaging rays,” she explains. “The American Academy of Dermatology Association reports that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. The vast majority of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma. I have prioritized early detection after experiencing the loss of a family member to melanoma.”
As for training tips for others participating in this year’s event, Ms. Pellegrino says to focus on your feet.
“Get the right shoes for your feet,” she says. “Runners come in all shapes, sizes and strides. Having the right shoes fitted by an expert will help minimize injury and keep you on track to a strong finish. Remember, anyone can be a runner. Pick a cause, lace up your running shoes and get started.”
