EVMS Medical Group names new CEO
After an extensive national search, EVMS Medical Group is pleased to announce Po Chou, MPH, MS, will lead the organization as chief executive officer (CEO). Mr. Chou is a proven healthcare leader with more than 30 years of experience at medical centers across the country.
His first day at EVMS Medical Group will be July 5, 2023.
“Mr. Chou is an experienced and skillful executive with a background in high-level, strategic leadership at myriad health and medical centers and an unwavering focus on excellence in patient care,” says Alfred Abuhamad, MD, President, Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine. “I am confident he will be a tremendous asset to EVMS and the EVMS Medical Group and support and expand our mission to provide patient-centered, quality healthcare in Hampton Roads.”
Most recently, Mr. Chou served as Senior Vice President of Strategy, Business Development and Innovation for Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health (RWJBH) in West Orange, New Jersey. RWJBH is the largest health system in New Jersey and the state’s largest private employer with 32,000 employees, 9,000 physicians and 1,000 residents. The system includes 13 acute care hospitals and treats more than three million patients each year. Prior to that role, Mr. Chou served as CEO of RWJBH’s Clinically Integrated Network and Senior Vice President with responsibilities in RWJBH’s Joint-Venture Management, Population Health and Physician Services as well as the company’s Medical Group.

EVMS Medical Group includes 150 physicians, many of whom are national leaders in their fields. The medical group handles more than 415,000 patient visits annually and treats more than 1,600 patients every day at 29 practice locations throughout Hampton Roads.
Prior to joining RWJBH, Mr. Chou served in executive leadership roles at various academic medical centers, health organizations and government agencies, including Tenet Healthcare, the University of Texas Medical School, the George Washington University School of Medicine, and the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.
A graduate of George Washington University, Mr. Chou holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) and a Master of Science (MS) degree from the University of Texas.
Mr. Chou will take over the role of CEO from Barry Strasnick, MD, Medical Director, Chair and Professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.
