Graduates in regalia smile for the camera during 2024 Commencement

Eastern Virginia Medical School hosted its final Commencement on May 18, as the institution prepares to integrate with Old Dominion University. This year’s event held special significance, coinciding with EVMS’ 50th Anniversary and honoring its half-century legacy.

Alfred Abuhamad, MD, President, Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine and the Mason C. Andrews Distinguished Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology, welcomed approximately 350 graduates and their and guests to the ceremony.

“If we have learned anything over the last 50 years, it’s that the EVMS story always has been one of vision. Together, we have accomplished much, and there is still inspiring work left to do to make EVMS even more impactful and sustainable for all who come after us. We gather today to celebrate not only our graduates — of whom we are so very proud — but also the entire history of EVMS, our legacy and our promise.”

Reflecting on valuable advice he received as a student, keynote speaker Garth Graham, MD, MPH, Director and Global Head of Healthcare and Public Health Partnerships for YouTube and Google Health, encouraged graduates to think of their lives and careers as a book.

“Let your passion for health, public health and medicine be the weapon you wield to dismantle the barriers to health equity, to break down the walls that prevent access to quality care, and to illuminate the path toward a healthier future for all…Embrace your unique themes, fulfill your roles in the stories of others, and write a life narrative that is both meaningful and impactful.”

Commencement was held at Scope Arena in Norfolk.
