David Spiegel, MD, has been appointed Chair of EVMS Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Spiegel had been serving as Interim Chair over the course of the last year and was appointed following a national search.
 
With more than three decades of experience in psychiatry, Dr. Spiegel is a widely respected academic physician. Dr. Spiegel came to EVMS in 2001 following nearly a decade in private practice.

"Dr. Spiegel is a talented clinician and educator who has grown to become a valued leader in his department and within his profession," Alfrred Abuhamad, MD, President, Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine, said in announcing the appointment. Dr. Spiegel has served at the rank of Professor for the last decade, and he was Vice Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences before moving into the interim chair role. He holds the EVMS Foundation Chair in Psychiatry.

Dr. Spiegel is internationally known as a leader in the subspecialty of psychosomatic medicine and consultation psychiatry. Dr. Spiegel is an expert in the diagnosis and management of complex psychiatric disorders involving serious medical comorbidities. He has led the popular “mini-course” on neuropsychiatric assessment at annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Association.
 
Dr. Spiegel’s practice involves caring for patients at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and in EVMS outpatient clinic. This involves new and follow-up comprehensive evaluations, diagnoses and treatment planning for conditions including delirium, acute mania as well as mood, psychotic, neurocognitive and anxiety disorders. He is board certified in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.
 
He is the author or co-author of 75 published papers. He is co-editor of the book “Catatonia on the Consultation Liaison Service and Other Clinical Settings” and last year was appointed Editor in Chief of Clinical Neuropharmacology, one of the first journals devoted to the topic. He is the first psychiatrist to serve in this distinguished capacity.
 
Dr. Spiegel graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn and completed his residency training in Psychiatry and fellowship training in Consultation Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire and Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa.
