Community survey focused on patient transportation/access
Modern medicine holds great promise for patients in need of care. But what happens when patients can’t make it to the medical office?
A Department of Medicine research team has developed a community questionnaire to better understand this issue. The transportation equity and access to care questionnaire will inform researchers as they develop recommendations to assist EVMS Medical Group patients and others in Hampton Roads.
“We are trying to see what barriers patients are facing when trying to come to their medical appointments and also looking to build upon supports that are already helping them,” said Julie Sill, PhD, principal investigator for the project and research manager for the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Sill leads a team of 25 — faculty, staff, students and volunteers from the Hampton Roads Community Collaborative, in this joint venture with the Department of Diversity and Inclusion — to solicit feedback from patients who face transportation/access challenges.
“Because this project is attempting to glean a wide variety of perspectives from all over Hampton Roads, team members have also been attending local community events to tell others about the study,” Dr. Sill said. “Over the course of our project, we aim to attend at least one free event in each of seven Hampton Roads communities to make sure that we are encompassing the perspectives of those who may not be EVMS patients.”
Take the survey by Dec. 16.
