Application Process
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and its Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We urge you to submit an application through the NRMP ERAS for one of our four PGY-1 categorical positions. As such, we cannot negotiate with any candidate prior to the match that next occurs in mid-March. We do not offer pre-match positions.
The deadline for applications is October 1.
Our residency requires that applicants have:
- A passing score on United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step exams on your first attempt to be considered for an interview.
- We require a passing score for USMLE Step 2 on your first attempt prior to the Rank Order Match Certification deadline set by the NRMP.
- A minimum of three letters of recommendation in addition to your dean’s letter
- A spoken and written mastery of English
We do not accept applicants who graduated from medical school more than eight years prior to application.
International applicants must possess a valid ECFMG certificate at the time of application to our program. Our institution supports J-1 visas only.
We adhere to American federal law, and thus do not discriminate based on race, age, gender or country of origin, given valid work permits to work in the United States.
After receiving your application through ERAS, the residency program administration reviews candidate materials and selects individuals who qualify for interviews. We invite candidates to interview here in Norfolk based on the entire application dossier. Applicants selected for interviews will be notified by email to choose one of our interview dates in November, December or January to visit our program. The interview day agenda consists of program updates, tours and individual interviews with faculty and residents.
We do not offer observerships to prospective residents. No U.S. observership/clinical experience is necessary to apply to our residency. Medical students may complete an obstetrics and gynecology rotation through our medical school.
If you have questions about the application process, please contact Audra M. Mitchell, Residency Program Manager, by phone at 757.446.7470 or by email at obgynres@evms.edu.
