Mission

The mission of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship is to train the academic future leaders in Maternal-Fetal Medicine with four major goals:

  • Develop technical skills in obstetrical sonography with an emphasis on prenatal diagnosis, fetal echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound, and cardiovascular fetal assessment.
  • Enhance surgical skills in obstetrics through involvement with complicated surgical cases, including placental abnormalities.
  • Expand on knowledge and skills in Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinical practice.
  • Enhance the expertise in clinical research through one-on-one mentorship in research planning and execution.

Goal activities and expectations

Aim #1

Develop your technical skills in obstetrical sonography with an emphasis on prenatal diagnosis, fetal echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound, cardiovascular fetal assessment and gynecologic sonography.

Activities

  • Hands-on ultrasound training with direct mentorship
  • Expert MFM faculty in ultrasound and fetal echo
  • First Trimester Ultrasound Clinic
  • Weekly US education session with fellowship director

Expectations

  • ARDMS Physics Certification by end of your first year
  • ARDMS OB/GYN Certification by end of your second year
  • ARDMS Fetal Echo Certification by end of your third year
  • Cervical Length Certification
  • NT Certification
  • Amniocentesis
  • CVS training (transabdominal and transvaginal)
  • Fetal transfusions
  • Fetal interventions (reduction, shunts, etc.)

Aim #2

Expand your knowledge in maternal and fetal medicine through supervised learning and continuity clinics.

Activities

  • High load of complicated surgical cases
  • Expert MFM faculty in surgical obstetrics
  • All accreta cases performed by MFM faculty

Expectations

  • Accreta clinic run by senior MFM fellows
  • Fellows scrub on all complicated surgical obstetrics

Aim #3

Expand your knowledge in maternal and fetal medicine through supervised learning and continuity clinics.

Activities

  • High load of complex obstetric cases
  • Expert MFM faculty in all aspects of MFM
  • Cutting edge diabetes in pregnancy program
  • Expanded reproductive genetics training

Expectations

  • Continuity MFM clinic for three years
  • Direct supervision by MFM faculty
  • Assigned reading for three years
  • One-on-one training in diabetes in pregnancy (First and third year)

Aim #4

Augment your expertise in clinical research through one-on-one mentorship in research planning and execution.

Activities

  • Topic chosen by Jan of your first year
  • IRB approval by April of your first year
  • Recruitment completed by May of your second year
  • Thesis published by December of your third year
  • Thesis defense in January of your third year
