Hello from the Chair
I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Medicine, one of the largest academic departments. To me, so many aspects of academic medicine bring joy, from the ability to provide care to very sick and complex patients to the thrill of discovering new aspects of human biology and pathology. I also derive immense satisfaction from teaching students and residents and seeing them grow into exceptional clinicians.
I am very proud of our energetic team of dedicated and talented clinicians, researchers, and educators, who strive daily to make a difference. Our mission is to provide cutting-edge patient care, advance scientific knowledge through research, and provide exceptional medical education. The source of our energy is our patients. We respect the trust patients place in us, and we are honored to serve them.
The department has over 40 faculty members and more than 300 community faculty who work tirelessly to support the department and its institutional mission. The department educates over 55 internal medicine residents, 22 fellows, and over 250 medical students every year. Departmental faculty is vital to the success of our medical students, residents, and fellows.
Research is an important component of an academic department. Departmental faculty is actively engaged in a wide variety of clinical research including research in sepsis, cognitive disorders, diabetes mellitus, and healthcare disparities. A major initiative to enhance clinical research training of internal medicine residents and medical students interested in internal medicine is currently underway.
My main goal as Chair is to lead the Department of Medicine in a way that meets the mission ,to achieve excellence in education, research and patient care, and strengthens the core values of excellence, collegiality and integrity. Our patients remain our focus and serving them with the most outstanding comprehensive care remains central to our mission. While providing exceptional care to adults and the elderly, we continue to nurture strong bonds with our community and regional health systems. Enhancing opportunities for our medical students, residents and fellows to engage with our distinguished faculty and innovating in the delivery of medical education remains fundamental to our mission of providing an excellent medical education. As an academic center, we remain engaged in cutting-edge clinical research, address the challenges of the present, and prepare ourselves for the opportunities of the future.
