Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine

Dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, outstanding medical education, and cutting-edge research related to the diagnosis and treatment of lung conditions and critical illnesses.

Patient Care

Our physicians diagnose and treat disorders of the lungs and respiratory system. With Sentara Health and other regional partners, we have developed a center of excellence for pulmonary and critical care medicine. Our campus contains the region’s only accredited pulmonary hypertension and cystic fibrosis centers, and the only tertiary care facility. Additional subspecialty clinics include post-acute COVID symptoms, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and transplant pulmonology.

  • Our physicians specialize in the diagnosis and management of advanced asthma, interstitial lung diseases and sarcoidosis.
  • Our pulmonologists offer a wide range of advanced bronchoscopic procedures.
  • Our intensive care physicians manage commonly occurring critical illnesses such as sepsis, multi-organ failure and COVID-19. They also provide subspecialty expertise in neurocritical care, advanced heart failure, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Education

  • In addition to the three-year Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship, we offer a two-year Critical Care fellowship track for Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine physicians.
  • One of the few programs that offer three-year tracks in Nephrology/Critical Care and Infectious Diseases/Critical Care.
  • Approved as a pilot site for combined fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine.
  • All critical care fellows have the opportunity to pursue board certification in critical care echocardiography.
  • Advanced subspecialty training for future pulmonologists and critical care providers in our ACGME-accredited fellowship program

Research

Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University has a proud history of pulmonary and critical care research. Partnerships with Old Dominion University, Sentara Health, and other regional healthcare partners provide endless opportunities for research and discovery. Current areas of active research within the division include acute and post-acute COVID-related illnesses, acute respiratory distress syndrome, healthcare disparities, medical education, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, patient safety/quality improvement, advanced asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, and sepsis.

Our investigators also conduct clinical research studies on:

  • Nutrition and metabolic management in critical care patients
  • Hemodynamic monitoring in the ICU
  • Critical care ultrasound
  • Sleep and noise in the ICU
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Lung innate immunity and interaction with bacterial pathogens
