Hospital Medicine

About the Division

front of hospital and green spaceWelcome to the Division of Hospitalist Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The Division of Internal Medicine was formed in 1975 and has provided inpatient and outpatient care to the people of our region since that time. In response to the evolving healthcare landscape and the needs of our patients and community, we formed the Division of Hospital Medicine in July 2023. We are comprised of full-time hospitalists and also physicians who split their time between the hospital and outpatient practices.

Our group cares for patients at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the Sentara Heart Hospital. Together, these facilities are home to over 600 beds and are the only Level I Adult Trauma Center in Hampton Roads. In addition to delivering direct patient care and independently treating patients with a variety of conditions, our hospitalists help coordinate care and ensure communication with patients and families is clear and timely when patients require the help of multiple physicians. Our hospitalists also collaborate with case managers in the hospital and primary care physicians in the community to ensure patients receive the highest quality of care and can transition in and out of the hospital safely. As an academic hospitalist group, we work closely with resident physicians and medical students as teachers, researchers, and most importantly clinicians providing care to the people of Hampton Roads and surrounding areas. Our teams of physicians and students work together to ensure our patients’ needs are met.

In addition to inpatient teaching rounds, our hospitalists support the medical school and the internal medicine residency programs in educational and administrative roles. We are mentors to the learners in these programs in the pursuit of scholarly activities such as case reports, research projects, and quality improvement initiatives. These endeavors dovetail nicely with efforts spawned by hospital administration to continually advance the quality and state of the art of healthcare in Hampton Roads and beyond.
