Our Acute Care Surgery division specializes in surgical procedures involving cases of trauma, emergency general surgery and critical care.

Emergency General Surgery

Our surgeons provide emergency surgery services at the state-of-the-art, top-ranked regional medical center Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Trauma and Critical Care

The division has a staff of fellowship-trained trauma and critical care surgeons, with expertise in injury care, available around the clock. Our surgeons work in the region's only Level I trauma center and burn unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Injury

Injury is responsible for more deaths annually in people 44 years or younger than all other causes combined, according to the Centers for Disease Control. It is also responsible for the loss of more productive years of life than cancer and heart disease combined. Our trauma service evaluates about 2,000 injured patients annually. Our dedicated staff provides state-of-the-art care in the region's best resource available.

Burns

Our surgeons provide medical care for burn patients at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, which houses the region's only designated burn unit. Our physicians coordinate treatment with a team of highly skilled nurses, wound care specialists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists and physical and occupational therapists that provide a multidisciplinary approach to the burn patient resulting in the highest level of care available.

Our patients' injuries range from simple, minor burns to major burns from the likes of industrial accidents. Approximately 240 patients are hospitalized annually for burn care, and many more are treated on an outpatient basis.
