Surgery

Delivering unmatched state-of-the-art care, backed by groundbreaking research, to patients with emergency, critical or elective surgical needs.

Our residencies

Our Surgery Residency offers comprehensive training in acute care surgery, including trauma, emergency general surgery and critical care. Our Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency offers training in open and endovascular approaches to procedures.

Our fellowships

Our fellowships give surgeons a chance to specialize in advanced surgical care.

Manage overall care for ill and critically injured patients in our Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, or serve as the primary heart surgeon in hundreds of cases per year in our Vascular Surgery Fellowship.

Through research, better outcomes

Our research could improve patients' access to care. L.D. Britt, MD, MPH, the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, Edward J. Brickhouse Chair in Surgery, the Henry Ford Professor of Surgery, and Chair and Professor of Surgery at Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, is confronting healthcare disparities in surgery, backed by a $2.5 million NIH grant on behalf of the American College of Surgeons.

"Surgery is leading the charge," Dr. Britt says. But he wants this to be a template for any specialty that wants it. "There are no patents and no copyrights — we welcome everyone. The goal is to level the playing field across the board for all patients."

Compassion in patient care

We strive to provide the highest-quality care for every patient we serve. Our surgery specialties include:

  • Acute Care Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology

Our practice has access to research and specialists who form the medical school's faculty as well as the comprehensive resources of an academic medical center.

Supporting renowned programs

Our surgeons support Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the area's top-ranked hospital, where they staff the region's only Level I trauma center.

Our faculty also train medical students, residents, Surgical Critical Care fellows and Vascular Surgery fellows in this facility, which U.S. News & World Report has ranked in the top 50 hospitals in the nation in Cardiology & Heart Surgery, among other specialties.
