The mission of the Laboratory Animal Science program is to provide the essential knowledge and skills to produce competent professionals in the laboratory animal field.
The program is designed to build a solid foundation for a successful career in laboratory animal science. The courses focus on essential aspects of laboratory animal science, facilities, regulations, research and ethics. The practicum provides the student with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to the actual practice of laboratory animal science.
The program provides multidisciplinary graduate level education and training in current technology to meet the ever-changing demands for technically sophisticated, humane and well-considered use of animals in biomedical research.
The program has set the following goals for our graduates to achieve its mission:
- The graduates demonstrate mastery of the laboratory animal science field including animal models, diseases, husbandry practices and methods, and animal care procedures.
- The graduates command interdisciplinary scientific knowledge including biotechnology, biostatistics, and cryopreservation, which enables them to respond to industry trends as they relate to laboratory animal science and related fields.
- The graduates are able to apply scientific, methodology to solve complex research problems received from industry or from research institutions that may benefit societal health needs.
- The graduates are able to comply with current regulatory guidelines and ethics involved in animal care, facilities, and safe employment in the field.
- The graduates have gained various facility management and social competencies (critical thinking, team and communication abilities, intercultural experience, etc.) which prepare them for the challenges of employment, management and leadership.
