Family Hooding Policy for Doctor of Medicine (MD) Graduates
Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University recognizes the value of family legacy, tradition, and support in the professional development of our students and in supporting the mission of our institution. We therefore welcome eligible family members to participate in bestowing the doctoral hood upon a graduating MD student.
As such, up to 2 family members may hood a graduating student at the Advanced Degree Ceremony. Eligible family members must meet the following criteria:
- be a spouse, parent, grandparent, or sibling of the student and
- hold the same degree that will be conferred upon the student
Additionally, the family member must have one of the following affiliations:
- be an EVMS legacy graduate (prior to integration on July 1, 2024) or an EVMS at ODU graduate (post integration)
- hold a faculty appointment at Old Dominion University (ODU)
- be a current or former member of one of the following:
- ODU Board of Visitors
- Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University Board of Directors
- EVMS legacy Board of Visitors prior to June 30, 2024
- EVMS Foundation Board of Trustees
- Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences EVMS Medical Group at ODU Board of Directors
- have an emeritus designation bestowed by EVMS or ODU
