Marissa Galicia-Castillo, MD, FAAHPM, Director of the Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, is the John Franklin Distinguished Chair for Geriatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School and directs the Brock Fellowship for Hospice and Palliative Medicine. 

Dr. Galicia-Castillo holds Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. As part of the Geriatrics Academic Career Award program, she earned a Master's in Education from Old Dominion University.

She has been recognized by Coastal Virginia Magazine as a “Top Doc” in both Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine since 2008. She currently is a Fellow in the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, American Geriatrics Society and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Galicia-Castillo was in charge of the Lillian & Gideon Welles Grime Fellowship in Geriatrics and instrumental in creating the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. She developed a special Geriatrics-Internal Medicine (GeriMed) residency program.  She’s also served as chair of the Ethics Committee at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.  At the local level, she is president of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Galicia-Castillo grew up in Norfolk, Va., and stayed in the region for college. She completed a BS-MD program offered jointly by Old Dominion University and EVMS, attending ODU  for three years then completing her fourth year at EVMS, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry on her way to becoming a doctor. At EVMS, she completed her internship and residency, and she was selected to serve as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine. Afterward, she completed a fellowship in Geriatrics. She later earned a master’s degree in education from ODU.

She currently serves as Medical Director for the Sentara Norfolk General Palliative Medicine Team, Lake Taylor Palliative Care Medicine Team and Beth Sholom.
