A Hampton Roads native, Dr. James Dixon attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville receiving his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Immediately upon graduation, Dr. Dixon was accepted into Eastern Virginia Medical School where he received his medical degree.  He completed a family medicine residency at Riverside Hospital in Newport News and an internal medicine residency at EVMS.  He also holds a Certificate of Added Credentials in Geriatrics and is board certified in both Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Dr. Dixon serves as the Vice Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at EVMS where he holds the rank of Associate Professor.  He is the Program Director for the Combined Family Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency Program and holds numerous quality and hospital committee positions at both EVMS and Sentara Health System.

Dr. Dixon’s extensive teaching of medical students, interns and residents has won him numerous awards, most recently the Mason Andrews Community Service Award Given in Recognition of Significant Educational & Community Contributions to Sentara Hospitalists-Norfolk Medical Staff.  He continues to author articles and present regionally and nationally on the importance of Primary Care Medical Education.

Dr. Dixon serves as the Medical Director for Every Women’s Life, a breast and cervical cancer screening program for underserved women.
