A. Brooke Hooper, MD

Brooke Hooper obtained her MD degree from Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 2007, followed by training in combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. 

She served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, receiving a Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement. After being stationed at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth as an internist and pediatrician, Dr. Hooper decided to call Hampton Roads home and joined Eastern Virginia Medical School as a clinical faculty member in general Internal Medicine.

Dr. Hooper's clinical interests in primary care include the care of patients who are uninsured and underinsured, cultural humility, structural inequity, social determinants of health, high value care, and transitions of care, especially for adults with chronic health conditions originating in childhood. 

In addition to her passion for patient care, Dr. Hooper is very active in medical student education. She is the Assistant Vice Dean for Clinical Education at EVMS, course director for the Transition in Practice Series and faculty advisor for the EVMS Chapter of the American Medical Women's Association. 

Her interests in medical education include trainee well-being and promoting collegial learning environments and the development of compassionate physicians who also provide high quality patient care. Dr. Hooper is active in accreditation, career advising and transition points in medical education. She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society and has received numerous awards from students and residents in recognition of teaching, including the Sir William Osler Award for Outstanding Physician, Thomas Pellegrino Gold Reflex Hammer Award, Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award and Virginia ACP Academic Teaching Award. 

Outside the hospital, Dr. Hooper enjoys art history, musical theater, reading and spending time with her family and friends.
