Alberto E. Musto, MD, PhD, FAES
Dr. Alberto E. Musto, MD, PhD, FAES, is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Anatomy, one of the Module Directors of the Pre-clerkship CareForward Curriculum, School of Medicine and Director of Neuroanatomy course, School of Health Professionals at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Musto integrates an interdisciplinary approach in medical education and mentorship activities in neuroscience research to enhance research, and diversity in the new medical curricula. Dr. Musto’s scientific goal is to identify a potential biomarker and preventive therapies for epilepsy. He has been bestowed with a prestigious award -- Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society (FAES) – a lifetime professional honor in recognition of his accomplishments and dedication to excellence in epilepsy. He has several publications in major journals in the field of neuroscience and epilepsy, including with his colleagues patents in neuroprotection and against glioblastoma multiforme development. He has been a member of NIH grant review study sections. Also, He has been an invited speaker at National and International professional meetings. Prior to join EVMS, Dr. Musto was an Assistant Professor of Research of Neurosurgery, School of Medicine, LSUHSC, New Orleans, LA (2007-2015). He has been involved actively in medical education, anatomy, neurology, neuroimaging and neuroscience research in Schools of Medicine at Universidad de Buenos Aires, and Universidad Austral, Argentina (1987-2002) and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA (2002-2015). Dr. Musto received board certifications in both neurology and radiology in 2002, completed postgraduate studies in medical education in 2000, and management in health systems in Argentina in 2002. Also, he worked as emergency physician (1991-2002) and as chief of a medical imaging center (1999-2002) in Argentina. He completed a doctoral thesis in neurobiology in Universidad de Buenos Aires in 2002 and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroprotection in Louisiana State University Health Science Center, New Orleans, LA in 2006.

Research Interests
His primary research interest is to understand the immune-inflammatory process in the neural tissue following a brain injury that contribute to aberrant neuronal networks formations which mediate the development of epilepsy. Dr. Musto, with his collaborators at EVMS and using in vitro and in vivo experimental models of epilepsy, radiation exposure and brain tumors, investigates: a) single neuron and neuronal circuitry activities from hippocampus using silicon probes, multimcroelectrode arrays, and microsensors for glutamate and glucose; b) biology of neuronal terminals of pyramidal cells using histological and biochemical techniques; and c) role of the chemokines and cytokines molecules in the brain. These approaches will contribute to better understanding of the physiopathology of epileptogenesis, to identify a biomarker to predict onset of epilepsy and to determine a novel therapeutic target to prevent recurrent seizures.
