If you were exposed to a COVID-19 positive person or a person under investigation (PUI), or developed symptoms that you think might be consistent with COVID-19, please follow the instructions listed below. You will need to have basic information about the COVID-19 positive person you were exposed to, including the date of the contact/exposure and the date that person was tested (if known).

  • Contact the appropriate person in your program to indicate that you will not be in the learning environment until cleared by Student Health. Health Professions (other than Medical Master’s students) students should contact their program directors. Medical Master’s and Doctor of Medicine students should complete the EVMS MD and MM Leave Policy Reporting Form at this link.
  • Complete and submit the Student Exposure/Symptom Survey, which can be found at this link.
    • When you click on the button to submit the survey, you will see a “disposition” based on your responses. Read it carefully.
  • If the disposition indicates that Student Health will contact you, they will do so within 24 hours. If they do not, you should call 757.446.5700.
  • After talking to Student Health, if testing is indicated, call the EVMS Medical Group Quality Office at 757.451.6232 to schedule your drive through testing.
  • Print the self-monitoring form for symptomatic or asymptomatic persons, as applicable.
  • Start monitoring your symptoms, following the instructions on the form. Failure to follow the instructions on the form will delay your return to school clearance.
  • You will be notified of your test result via phone by the EVMS Medical Group Quality Office during normal business hours Monday through Friday, if your test is negative. If your test is positive, you will be notified via phone by the EVMS Medical Group Quality Office as soon as it becomes available. Student Health does not report test results.
  • Test results on average take one to three days to come back but could take longer.
  • When you receive your test results, contact Student Health at 757.446.5700 and they will provide you with further instructions regarding your return to work clearance.
  • At the appropriate time, based on the instructions in the self-monitoring form or your communication with Student Health, send Student Health your self-monitoring form. Student Health will review your test results and self-monitoring form to ensure that you have met the return to school clearance criteria, per the applicable protocol. They will then issue you and your program director a return to school clearance notification, if indicated.
  • Students should not attend or be scheduled for any academic activities until they receive a return to school clearance notification from Student Health.
