Self Care for Health Care Providers

Last Updated: 04-03-2020 12:13 p.m.

EVMS Medical Group offers these recommendations on basic self care for health care providers and staff. This guidance is driven by the CDC and reviewed and approved by Dr. Edward Oldfield.

  • Change from your work clothes and shoes prior to entering your house (garage, hallway). Place your shoes in an empty plastic box if available.
  • Perform hand hygiene frequently. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60 to 95% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry. Soap and water should be used preferentially if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Clean all “high-touch” surfaces, such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and bedside tables, every day.
    • Use a household cleaning spray or wipe, according to the label instructions. Labels contain instructions for safe and effective use of the cleaning product including precautions you should take when applying the product, such as wearing gloves and making sure you have good ventilation during use of the product.
  • Wash laundry thoroughly.
    • Immediately remove and wash clothes or bedding that have blood, stool, or body fluids on them.
    • Wear disposable gloves while handling soiled items and keep soiled items away from your body. Clean your hands (with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) immediately after removing your gloves.
    • Read and follow directions on labels of laundry or clothing items and detergent. In general, using a normal laundry detergent according to washing machine instructions and dry thoroughly using the warmest temperatures recommended on the clothing label.
  • Place all used disposable gloves, facemasks, and other contaminated items in a lined container before disposing of them with other household waste. Clean your hands (with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) immediately after handling these items.
  • Soap and water should be used preferentially, if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Monitor your own symptoms daily. If you develop any of the symptoms do not report to work, notify and according to EVMS protocol
  • Take care of your emotional heath and the emotional health of your household members. Make time to unwind and remind yourself that strong feelings will fade. Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories about COVID-19. Connect with family and friends. Share your concerns and how you are feeling with others.

  • Practice and promote good hygiene. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • Lower your risk at meetings and events. Avoid gatherings of 25 or more, do not shake hands and encourage phone or video conferencing whenever possible.
  • The Employee Assistance Program can provide counseling and other resources to help employees deal with mental health issues and a wide range of other employee issues.
  • Many people are experiencing stress and anxiety as a result of COVID-19. Remember that EVMS health plans offer comprehensive coverage for both physical and mental health care. EVMS also encourages self-care during these stressful times. Remember that sleep and exercise promote immune system capacity.
  • Tips on coping during the COVID-19 outbreak from physician and author Russ Harris.
