The first Health Equity Inventory tool was developed in 2015 by the American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Center for Health Justice through a project to build a systems approach to health equity for academic health centers. In early 2022, the AAMC launched a two-year pilot with Vanderbilt University, EVMS, and three other academic medical institutions to update the HEI to a cloud-based version with downloadable reports.

The Brock Institute adapted the HEI tool developed through this pilot to meet the needs of our academic medical center and the unique needs in Hampton Roads.

The mission of HEI is to cultivate collaborations aimed at elevating regional health equity. Community partners are encouraged to share details about their efforts in health equity to enrich the collective inventory. The HEI will publish the inventory to support partners in: 1) gaining insights into other community health equity initiatives, 2) disseminating information about their own health equity endeavors, and 3) identifying avenues for collaborative action.
