Whether you're planning an event on your own or you represent an organization or business, we appreciate your willingness to raise awareness and funds for our research, medical programs and scholarships. Third-party fundraising events are vital and enable us to improve health in Hampton Roads and beyond. Big or small, every effort makes a difference.

  • More than 40 percent of EVMS graduates stay right here in Virginia and might be taking care of your loved ones. That means your support makes a direct impact on your community.
  • EVMS research speeds new information from the laboratory to your doctor's office. As the largest biomedical research organization in southeastern Virginia, we ensure the region's healthcare providers have access to the latest discoveries.
  • Supporting EVMS is an investment in your community. A recent report found that EVMS has an annual impact of $824 million on the region's economy.
  • Cancer, diabetes and geriatric research dollars stay local and are immediately put to use in research projects.
  • EVMS provides specialty services not available anywhere else. For example, EVMS Maternal-Fetal Medicine cares for the region's highest-risk pregnancies, and EVMS surgeons staff the Level I trauma center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where they care for the most critically ill and injured patients in our community.
  • It's a meaningful way to pay tribute to a loved one who has been treated by an EVMS physician or health professional.
  • EVMS' vision is to become the most community-oriented school of medicine and health professions in the nation. Our researchers are focused on Hampton Roads' most pressing healthcare issues, such as diabetes, certain types of cancer and infant mortality.

A third-party fundraiser is any fundraising initiative brought forward by an individual(s), community group, service club or business external to EVMS that wishes to raise money through a planned activity designed, managed and financially resourced by the external participants.

  • The activity is independent from EVMS; however, all or a portion of the net proceeds generated are donated to the EVMS Foundation.
  • Any reimbursable expenses must be approved prior to being incurred.
  • All planning, implementation, staffing and management of the event is executed by the external participants.
  • Approved EVMS logo and signage
  • An EVMS staff member or volunteer to attend the event or check presentation, if applicable
  • Tax receipting according to the United States Office of Internal Revenue
  • A listing in the EVMS website event calendar
  • A subscription to EVMS Magazine
  • Invitation to certain EVMS donor-relations events

We encourage you to work with your friends, coworkers or employees to come up with new ideas for your fundraising event — something your group will get excited about. Also, remember to share your fundraising event with family, friends and coworkers on your social media platforms of choice: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and others.

  • Host an event at your favorite establishment. Sell tickets to friends and coworkers. Hold a prize drawing at the event.
  • Host a dodgeball or cornhole tournament. Invite teams to register to participate in a fun day of activities and determine the winning group.
  • Hold a "jeans day" in your office. Staff members who donate a certain amount to EVMS, such as $5 or $10, can wear jeans to the office that day.
  • Host a dinner or luncheon for your friends and ask them to make a donation to EVMS.
  • Birthday wishes. Instead of presents, ask family and friends to donate to your designated program at EVMS.

Once you've determined that you'd like to hold a fundraiser to benefit EVMS, contact EVMS Development as soon as possible so that we can review your application. This is your event, but we're here to provide guidance. Below are the EVMS guidelines to help get you started:

  • EVMS Development will provide institutional support, such as logos, and help to ensure you are in accordance with the third-party fundraising guidelines. 
  • Early in your planning, determine the goals for your fundraising event. Remember that events should net a minimum of 50 percent of the gross income.
  • As a volunteer fundraiser, you/your organization will be responsible for planning, implementing, staffing and managing the event or activity.
