Medical Student Program

The Medical Microbiology and Immunology Course is offered in the fall semester for second-year medical students. The course is divided into five sections: Immunology, Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology and Parasitology. Instruction involves didactic lectures, clinical correlation conferences, and hands-on laboratories. The Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program

Graduate research and educational opportunities are provided by the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology through the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program, a joint program sponsored by Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University. Training within the program is organized into five (5) separate tracks. The two tracks located at EVMS are

  • Cell Biology and Molecular Pathogenesis and
  • Systems Biology and Biophysics

The graduate program provides formal courses and research opportunities leading to the Ph.D. degree. Students first take an interdisciplinary program of study that provides a breadth of knowledge spanning the basic biomedical sciences. With this knowledge as a foundation, students then explore specific biomedical problems in advanced courses and research. Faculty members in the Department serve as mentors to doctoral students interested in pursuing research in their areas of concentration.

The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology offers research opportunities for Ph.D. students in the Cell Biology and Molecular Pathogenesis track which has individualized programs in cell biology, tumor biology, molecular biology, immunology, and infectious disease.

The Department's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers advanced training and research opportunities for fellows who have received their M.D. or Ph.D. degrees. Postdoctoral fellows undertake specific research projects under the guidance of Department faculty members.
