Graduate Course Descriptions

BIMD 840. Current Topics in Molecular Biology. SPRING 3 credits. Prerequisites: BIMD 802 and 848. Emphasis is placed on theory and techniques of research in eukaryotic gene structure and organization, regulation of gene expression, control of transcription and translation, and post translational processing. Students will read scientific papers, engage in class discussions and make oral presentations.

Spring semester
Course director: Timothy J. Bos, Ph.D.

BIMD 842. Microbiology and Immunology Journal Club. FALL AND SPRING 1 credit. Available for pass/fail grading only. Presentations by students and discussion of current literature in the areas of tumor biology, immunology, virology and molecular biology. Specific papers concerning major scientific advancements are discussed and critiqued.

Fall and Spring semesters
Course director: Richard Ciavarra, Ph.D.

BIMD 848. Advanced Cell Biology. FALL Lecture 3 hours; 3 credits. Prerequisites: BIOL 726 or CHEM 541 or concurrent BIMD 802. An overview of selected topics in contemporary cell and molecular biology including the molecular genetic basis of normal and aberrant cell growth, cytoskeleton, extracellular matrix, lipids, signal transduction, oncogenes, and growth factors.

Fall semester
Course director: Timothy J. Bos, Ph.D.

BIMD 849. Current Topics in Molecular and Cellular Immunology. SPRING 2 credits. Prerequisites: BIOL 509 or BIMD 804. A review of current scientific papers in specific areas of immunology. Student presentations, discussions, and readings in these areas.

Spring semester, even years
Course director: Richard Ciavarra, Ph.D.

BIMD 852. Virology. FALL 3 credits. Prerequisites: BIMD 802, 803, 804, and 848. Lecture style presentations given by faculty and students, and discussion of the literature. Topics include virus classification, replication, genetics, virus-host interactions, viral immunity, oncogenic viruses, and pathogenesis of various clinically relevant viruses.

Fall semester, odd years
Course director: Ann Campbell, Ph.D.

BIMD 854. Tumor Biology. SPRING 3 credits. Prerequisites: BIMD 848. An overview of cancer biology. Following an introduction to the pathology and natural history of cancer, specific topics including tumor cell behavior and diagnosis and treatment of cancer will be covered.
