Q Am I required to have a research mentor/advisor to apply for the program?

A

No. The dissertation mentor is selected at the end of the first year of studies. Laboratory rotations will assist the student in choosing an advisor.

Q Will I receive a stipend and a tuition waiver?

A

If accepted into the program, students will receive a competitive stipend ($23,000 per year for 2008-2009) and a tuition waiver.

Q Can I apply for financial aid?

A

All students can still apply for financial aid through the EVMS Office of Financial Aid.

Q What criteria are used to evaluate applicants for admission into the program?

A

In addition to the admission requirements, the following factors are very important: past research experience and demonstrating strong motivation for a research career.

Q How many years does it take to complete the program?

A

Completion of a Ph.D. program requires a significant amount of time and effort. The average student completes the program in 5 to 6 years; the amount of effort invested by the individual student and previous experience are major determinants.
