Access Medicine
Description: AccessMedicine is designed for direct access to the information necessary for completing evaluations, diagnoses, case management decisions, conducting research, medical education, or self-assessment and board review.
Contains over 55 textbooks including Harrison's Online, CURRENT Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine, and the Lange Educational Library.
Includes USMLEasy, with 3,800 USMLE-formatted questions, answers and explanations including references back to AccessMedicine for further reading.
Currency: Updated daily by world-renowned physicians and expanded continuously.

ACP Journal Club EVMS resource
Description: ACP Journal Club (ACPJC) is an evidence based surveillance and abstracting service published by the American College of Physicians (ACP). It contains structured abstracts that summarize the most important methodologically sound articles pertaining to clinical practice.
Search: Uses 'full-text' search techniques (the database will look for search terms in the article text and title) to find abstracts. Indexed articles provide links to the PubMed record and are available in full-text. The Basic Search function allows you to enter key terms and phrases that will be searched against the ACPJC collection. The Advance Search function provides a search template that allows the use of Boolean logic (AND/OR/NOT/NEAR) to combine search terms and search like terms. Click on the SEARCH button in the tool bar at the top of the page. The default is the Basic Search. Search results are displayed by the title of the article. Click on the title and the full-text will be displayed.
Scope: Primary and secondary (reviews and guidelines) clinical studies that meet key methodological criteria are summarized and commented on by experts. Covers internal medicine and primary care.
Use: Best used for questions that can be addressed using clinical research, strongest for therapy and prognosis, weaker for diagnosis and causation. (Foreground Questions)
Validity: Articles are selected if they report evidence that could change what practitioners do. Explicit methods of selecting and summarizing articles are described in the introduction.
Applicability: Each abstract summarizes details about patients, practitioners and practices; experts comment on clinical relevance.
Currency: Publishing began in 1991. Six issues per year.

ACP Medicine  EVMS resource
Description: ACP Medicine is an evidence-based internal medicine diagnosis and treatment reference. Developed from WebMD® Scientific American® Medicine, ACP Medicine is continually updated and is available in several print and electronic formats.
Search: ACP Medicine is designed to allow the user to browse by topic or use a keyword search function. ACP Medicine provides 'full-text' search techniques (the database will look for search terms in the article text and title).
Scope: Covers the 15 subspecialties of internal medicine, plus key topics in Women's Health, Preventive Medicine, Psychiatry, and more.
Use: Organized by health condition and disease. ACP Medicine provides in-depth coverage of topics. It is an excellent source for Background Questions.
Validity: Content is subject to editorial, peer and user review.
Applicability: Narrative summaries of conditions including sections on epidemiology.
Currency: Updates are ongoing and occur frequently. Over 30% new content per year.

ACP PIER   EVMS resource
Description: PIER© is an evidence-based guidance tool designed to improve clinical care at the point of care. PIER© is a product of ACP, The American College of Physicians. It integrates and builds on other ACP-ASIM publications including ACP Journal Club and MKSAP. Content derives from evidence-based synopses of the literature on a condition or disease.
Search: PIER is designed to allow the user to browse by topic or use a keyword search function. PIER provides 'full-text' search techniques (the database will look for search terms in the article text and title).
Scope: PIER© is a collection of disease modules that can be searched, found alphabetically or browsed by organ system. Subcategories for each disease are: Prevention, Screening, Diagnosis, Consultation for Diagnosis, Hospitalization, Non-drug Therapy, Drug Therapy, Patient Education, Consultation for Management, and Follow-up. Additional topics are addressed under Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Ethical and Legal Issues and Procedures.
Use: Organized by health condition and disease, optimized for quick review of disease management. Most complete for prevention, diagnosis and therapy. (Background Questions)
Validity: Content is subject to editorial, peer and user review, relies on sources (e.g., ACP Journal Club) for much of the filtering and appraisal of validity.
Applicability: Quick access to lists of key points in disease management. Guidelines are given for application to patient care.
Currency: Publishing began in 2002. Updates are ongoing and occur frequently.

Academic Search Complete
Description: Academic Search Complete is the world's most valuable and comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with more than 5,500 full-text periodicals, including more than 4,600 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 9,500 journals and a total of more than 10,000 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1887, with the majority of full text titles in native (searchable) PDF format. Searchable cited references are provided for nearly 1,000 journals.

Alternative Health Watch
Description: This database focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It offers libraries full text articles for more than 180 international, and often peer-reviewed journals and reports. In addition, there are hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts. Alt HealthWatch provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine. This database features indexing and abstracts going back as far as 1984, and full text going back as far as 1990.

American Hospital Directory EVMS resource
Description: The American Hospital Directory provides online data for over 6,000 hospitals.
Scope: The information about hospitals is built from both public and private sources including Medicare claims data (MedPAR and OPPS), hospital cost reports, and other files obtained from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Currency: Frequent updates.

Anatomy.TV  EVMS resource
Description: Anatomy.TV
is a suite of 3D interactive models of human anatomy. Intuitive controls allow the user to zoom, rotate and peel away layers to educate and communicate with an ease and directness that was never possible with print. A wealth of supporting media, MRIs, X-rays, live-action movies and animations are also included to supplement anatomy.tv's high resolution, computer-generated models.

Associates Programs Source
Description:The Associates Programs Source is designed specifically for junior & community colleges with a primary focus on disciplines of study within associate degrees and certification programs. Areas explored include accounting, agricultural sciences, child care services, cosmetology, culinary arts, forestry, food service management, graphic arts, hair dressing, hospitality management, interior design, journalism, plumbing, heating & air conditioning, veterinary technology and welding to name a few. The database is updated weekly on EBSCOhost.

Bandolier   Free resource
Description: Each month PubMed and the Cochrane Library are searched for systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in the recent past. Those that look remotely interesting are read, and where they are both interesting and make sense, they appear in Bandolier, first in the paper version and, after a few months, on the Web site.
Search: The entire site can be searched or topics can be browsed by clicking on the journal issues or topic sections.
Scope: The impetus behind Bandolier was to find information about evidence of effectiveness (or lack of it), and put the results forward as simple bullet points of those things that worked and those that did not: a bandolier with bullets. Information comes from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized trials, and from high quality observational studies.
Use: Content is limited, but it does have a good training section, with tutorials and essays on EBM principles.
Validity: Content is subject to editorial and peer review.
Currency: Publishing began in 1994. Updates are ongoing and occur frequently.

BestBETs (Best Evidence Topics)   Free resource
Description: BETs are clinically appraised topics developed in the Emergency Department of Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK, to provide rapid evidence-based answers to real-life clinical questions, using a systematic approach to reviewing the literature.
Search: The database can be searched using Boolean operators or browsed by title or topic.
Scope: Each Topic answers a carefully worded 3-part question, using a structured approach to finding and reviewing the literature.
Use: Although BETs initially had an emergency medicine focus, there are a significant number of BETs covering cardiothoracics, nursing, primary care and pediatrics.
Validity: BETs take into account the shortcomings of much current evidence, allowing physicians to make the best of what there is. 
Currency: Appraised topics provide the initial development date and the date of the latest update.

Business Source Complete
Description: Business Source Complete is the world's definitive scholarly business database, providing the leading collection of bibliographic and full text content. As part of the comprehensive coverage offered by this database, indexing and abstracts for the most important scholarly business journals back as far as 1886 are included. In addition to the searchable cited references provided for more than 1,200 journals.  

CINAHL EVMS resource
Description: The CINAHL database is the authoritative source of information for the professional literature of nursing, allied health, biomedicine, and health care. The database also includes relevant materials from seventeen allied health disciplines, plus biomedicine, management, behavioural sciences, health sciences librarianship, education, and consumer health.
Search: CINAHL tutorial
Scope: CINAHL database provides references to books, book chapters, pamphlets, audiovisuals, dissertations, educational software, selected conference proceedings, standards of professional practice, nurse practice acts, critical paths, and research instruments. It provides indexing for 2,857 journals with over 1,000,000 citations.
Currency: 1982 to present.

Cochrane Library  EVMS resource
Description: Cochrane’s Database of Systematic Reviews (DSR) is a collection of high quality systematic reviews of controlled trials, including unpublished trials, produced by groups of collaborators (researchers and practitioners) who are organized through the Cochrane Collaboration. The Cochrane Library includes 7 other databases including: 1) Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) - critical assessments and structured abstracts of good systematic reviews published elsewhere and 2) Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CCRCT) - bibliographic information on controlled trials.
Search: Each database within the Cochrane Library can be searched simultaneously by using the keyword search function provided from the home page. Search results (number of hits) are listed according to specific database. To display search results, click on the number of hits located directly across from the database name. The search browser is not organized by clinical conditions. Articles are indexed according to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Search by using the keyword search function for the best results. Most articles are provided in full-text.
Scope: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (DSR) includes planned [Protocol] and completed [Review] reviews. The topics reflect the interests and priorities of Cochrane Collaboration members.
Use: DSR is best for therapy or preventive care questions that can be addressed by strong quantitative study designs. (Foreground Questions) Does not cover Diagnosis at this time.
Validity: Strictly controlled methods for identifying, reviewing, and performing the meta-analysis for evidence in each review. Extensive links to source evidence including studies excluded from the review.
Applicability: Systematic reviews often include extensive sub-group analyses and policy considerations. Effect sizes usually expressed as absolute risk reduction and number needed to treat. Cumulative meta-analysis can be displayed for subgroups.
Currency: Publishing began in 1993. Updates occur quarterly, the date of last update is given for each review. Substantive changes are highlighted.

Communication & Mass Media Complete
Description: Communication & Mass Media Complete provides the most robust, quality research solution in areas related to communication and mass media. CMMC incorporates the content of CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study to create a research and reference resource of unprecedented scope and depth encompassing the breadth of the communication discipline. CMMC offers cover-to-cover (“core”) indexing and abstracts for more than 440 journals, and selected (“priority”) coverage of nearly 200 more, for a combined coverage of more than 640 titles. Furthermore, this database includes full text for 326 journals.  

Computers & Applied Sciences Complete
Description: Computers & Applied Sciences Complete covers the research and development spectrum of the computing and applied sciences disciplines. CASC provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,720 academic journals, professional publications, and other reference sources from a diverse collection. Full text is also available for more than 670 periodicals.  

Current Index to Statistics (CIS)  EVMS resource
Description: CIS is a bibliographic index to publications in statistics, probability, and related fields.
Search: Supports keyword, author, title, and journal or book title queries.
Scope: References are drawn from 162 core journals (as of 2003) that are fully indexed, non-core journals from which articles are selected that have statistical content, proceedings and edited books, and other sources.
Currency: 1975 to present.

DARE Free resource
Description: DARE is a complimentary site produced by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) that searches a wide spectrum of medical literature including MEDLINE for meta-analyses.
Search: DARE has a well developed search function and supports Boolean and field searching.
Scope: DARE contains summaries of systematic reviews which have met strict quality criteria. Included reviews have to be about the effects of interventions. Potential reviews are identified by hand searching key medical journals, regular searching of bibliographic databases, and by scanning gray literature and selected Web sites.
Use: The database covers a broad range of health and social care topics and can be used for answering questions about the effects of interventions, as well as for developing guidelines and policy making.
Validity: In order to ensure quality, CRD has a policy of using two members of staff to independently select reviews for inclusion and to produce each structured abstract.
Applicability: Each summary also provides a critical commentary on the quality of the review.
Currency: DARE was created by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination in 1994. It does, however, include records that have an earlier publication date. There are monthly updates to the Web site.

DYNAMED
Description: DynaMed is a clinical reference tool created by physicians for use primarily at the 'point-of-care'. It contains clinically-organized summaries for nearly 2,000 topics.
Search: The database can be searched by keyword or browsed by condition or category.
Scope: Editors monitor the content of over 400 medical journals and systematic evidence review databases.
Use: “Point-of-care” resource covering risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, prognosis, and patient information.
Validity: Each publication is reviewed cover-to-cover, and each article is evaluated for clinical relevance and scientific validity. The new evidence is then integrated with existing content, and overall conclusions are changed as appropriate representing a synthesis of the best available evidence. Through this process of systematic literature surveillance, the best available evidence determines the content of DynaMed.
Currency: DynaMed is updated daily

Economia y Negocios
Description: Economia y Negociosis the result of a collaborative effort between EBSCO Publishing and ESAN (Escuela de Administración de Negocios para Graduados). More than 70,000 records, dating back to the early 1980s, provide coverage for over 300 Spanish and Portuguese-language periodicals published in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, the United States and elsewhere.

Education Research Complete 
Description: Education Research Complete is the definitive online resource for education research. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. Education Research Complete provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,840 journals, as well as full text for more than 950 journals, and includes full text for more than 81 books and monographs, and for numerous education-related conference papers.  

eMedicine (Free resource)
Description: Launched in 1996, www.eMedicine.com comprises one of the largest and most current clinical knowledge databases available to physicians and other health care professionals.
Search: Search across all sections or browse by condition in the Adult Medicine, Adult Surgery or Pediatrics sections.
Scope: Nearly 10,000 physician authors and editors contribute to the eMedicine Clinical Knowledge Base, which contains articles on 7,000 diseases and disorders. The database also contains 30,000 multimedia files and features the largest online repository of medical education credits for physicians, nurses, and optometrists.
Validity: eMedicine's professional content undergoes 4 levels of physician peer review plus an additional review by a PharmD prior to publication.
Currency: The evidence-based content, updated regularly, provides the latest practice guidelines in 59 medical specialties.

Environment Complete
Description: Environment Complete offers deep coverage in applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more. Environment Complete contains more than 1,772,000 records from more than 1,680 domestic and international titles going back to the 1940s (including 1,108 active core titles) as well as more than 100 monographs. The database also contains full text for more than 650 journals.  

ERIC (OVID) EVMS resource
Description: The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) is a digital library of education-related resources, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education. ERIC is the world's largest database of journal and non-journal education literature containing nearly 1.2 million citations going back to 1966.
SearchOVID Tutorial
Scope: ERIC consists of two files: Resources in Education, which covers the document literature, consisting of research reports, curriculum and teaching guides, conference papers, and books; and Current Index to Journals in Education, which covers published journal literature from over 775 periodicals.
Currency: Over 30,000 records added annually.

EXAM MASTER ONLINE EVMS resource
Description: EXAM MASTER ONLINE is an USMLE and board preparation review tool that provides access to thousands of basic and clinical sciences questions. The interface allows for quick and easy navigation, and provides the ability to create customized practice exams and study blocks. The EXAM MASTER testing interface closely matches what is actually used on the USMLE exam. This new test mode interface includes other features found on the exam including the ability to attach notes to each question.

Factiva®, from Dow Jones.
Description: Factiva provides essential business news and information together with the content delivery tools and services that enable professionals to make better decisions faster. Factiva’s unrivaled collection of more than 10,000 authoritative sources includes the exclusive combination of The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times™, Dow Jones and Reuters newswires and the Associated Press, as well as Reuters Fundamentals, and D&B company profiles.

Faculty Publications  Free EVMS Resource
Description: The Faculty Publications Database is a searchable catalog of citations to articles, book chapters, and books by EVMS faculty. Citations are selected for inclusion through monthly searches of the biomedical literature and direct submissions by faculty members.
Search: The database can be searched using the author name, keyword, periodical title, and publication date (All indexed fields), or by title, abstract, or addresses (all non-indexed fields.) For example, to search for articles published by a particular EVMS department, set the “Field to Search” to All non-indexed fields, and enter the department under “Data to Locate.” The search terms can be combined using the available Boolean operators (and, or, not) located in the first column.
Currency: The database includes citations from July 1998 to the present.

FirstSearch   EVMS resource
Description: FirstSearch is an OCLC services providing access to 20 databases including WorldCat and ArticleFirst.
Search: The database supports Boolean (and, or, not) searching and offers basic keyword searching and advanced field searching. Users can also limit a search by database or topic.
Scope: FirstSearch offers access to more than 10 million full-text and full-image articles on most research topics.

Description: Fuente Académica provides full text (including PDF) for a rapidly growing collection of scholarly Spanish language journals. This multi-disciplinary database offers full text content to many academic areas including business & economics, medical sciences, political science, law, computer science, library & information sciences, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy and theology.  

HarpWeek   EVMS resource
Description: HarpWeek is the full text of Harper’s Weekly from 1857 through 1912.

Health Source: Consumer Edition
Description: This database is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide, providing information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Health Source: Consumer Edition provides access to nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines.  

Health Source: Nursing/ Academic Edition
Description: This database provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition also features the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names.  

Hospitality & Tourism Complete
Description: Hospitality & Tourism Index is a bibliographic database covering scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism. This comprehensive database contains more than 721,000 records from more than 650 titles, with coverage dating as far back as 1965.  

Humanities International Complete
Description: Humanities International Complete provides full text of hundreds of journals, books and other published sources from around the world. Produced by Whitston Publishing (an imprint of EBSCO Publishing), this database includes all data from Humanities International Index (more than 2,000 journals and 2 million records) plus unique full text content, much of which is not found in other databases. The database includes full text for more than 730 journals.  

Legal Collection
Description: This database contains full text for more than 250 of the world's most respected, scholarly law journals. The Legal Collection is an authoritative source for information on current issues, studies, thoughts and trends of the legal world.  

LexisNexis Academic
Description: News and business content from newspapers, periodicals, television and radio broadcasts, newswires, blogs, corporate directories and financial information. Search deep backfiles of hundreds of local, regional, and national newspapers from around the world, in English and major European languages.
Over 6,000 individual sources.

LexisNexis Congressional
Description: The most comprehensive online resource available for Congressional hearings, public issues, legislation, history, and legal research. Perform in-depth research with access to the full-text of more than 214 years worth of detailed information about Congress, including member biographies, committee assignments, voting records, financial data, and the full-text of key regulatory and statutory resources.

Masterfile Premier
Description: This multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 1,750 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes nearly 500 full text reference books, full text from 86,019 biographies, 105,787 full text primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 293,480 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.  

MDConsult   EVMS resource
Description: MDConsult is a database produced by a joint venture of the leading medical publishers that includes more than 50 full text reference works, over 70 full text key medical journals, 6,500 patient education handouts, 600 peer-reviewed practice guidelines, and full text drug information.
Search: MDConsult supports basic and advanced searching. You may search through all sections simultaneously for your topic or limit your search to type of resource. Book and journals titles can also be searched individually.
Scope: In addition medical textbooks and journals, MD Consult reports on "Today in Medicine," "What patients are reading", and other sources of current medical information, along with offering CME opportunities.
Use: Helpful resource for physicians and other healthcare professionals.
Currency: Weekly updates.

Medical Modeling and Simulation Database (MMSD)
Description: The premier gateway to a broad array of resources and services related to the medical modeling and simulation world, including content for practitioners, researchers, and those working in academia.  Contains a Research Articles database, a Companies and Products database, and a Simulation Centers database. 
Currency: Updated quarterly.

MedicLatina
Description: MedicLatina is a unique collection of medical research and investigatory journals from renowned Latin American and Spanish publishers. This Spanish language database contains full text for nearly 120 peer-reviewed medical journals in native Spanish.  

MEDLINE (through OVID)   EVMS resource
Description: MEDLINE®, the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) bibliographic database, is the primary source in the United States for information from the biomedical literature, containing over 16 million references to articles from more than 4,800 journals. MEDLINE® is the computerized counterpart of Index Medicus, the Index to Dental Literature, and the International Nursing Index.
SearchOVID Tutorial

Scope: Contains extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 700 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials.

Description: Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military and government, this database offers a thorough collection of periodicals, academic journals, and other content pertinent to the increasing needs of those sites. The Military & Government Collection provides cover-to-cover full text for nearly 300 journals and periodicals and indexing and abstracts for nearly 400 titles.  

MLA International Bibliography (through InfoTrac) EVMS resource
Description: The MLA International Bibliography is a subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics. It is produced by the Modern Language Association (MLA).

Description: PsychBITE™ (Psychological Database for Brain Impairment Treatment Efficacy) is a database that catalogues studies of cognitive, behavioral and other treatments for psychological problems and issues occurring as a consequence of acquired brain impairment (ABI). The types of studies contained on this database are Systematic Reviews, Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT), Non-Randomized Controlled Trials (non-RCT), Case Series (CS), and Single Subject Design (SSD).

Description: PubMed Clinical Queries offers a user-friendly filtered search approach to the Medline database. Designed for busy practitioners, Clinical Queries is a specialized interface that provides fast, reliable access to clinical studies that are more likely to have strong research methods.
Search: Clinical Queries offers four clinical study categories to choose from: therapy, diagnosis, etiology, and prognosis. Searches can also be limited by sensitivity (for broad search results) or specificity (for precise search results). Systematic Reviews only.

UpToDate EVMS resource available in the Library's Computer Classroom
Description:
UpToDate is a clinical consulting tool covering the internal medicine subspecialties, family medicine and pediatrics. Topic reviews are based on clinical conditions. Topic cards may contain aids such as graphs, photos, calculators, and links to drug information and MEDLINE abstracts of cited articles.
Search:
Browse the table of contents or search using key words. Searches can be narrowed by a topic list or by entering a second search term after the first search is completed. No Boolean searching. UpToDate also provides a tutorial on their website.
Scope:
Covers internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics; some are still in development. Strong in all areas including clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and causation but the “strength of evidence” is best presented for therapy. Some patient education materials are available.
Use:
Best for questions relating to diagnosis and disease management. (Background Questions)
Validity:
Topic reviews are written by experts and peer reviewed. Reviewers monitor over 200 journals each month. UpToDate includes detailed up-to-date references for each topic card; references link to Medline abstracts. Editors are developing a process to make topic reviews explicitly evidence-based.
Currency:
Publishing began in 1992. Updates occur every 4 months, date of last update is given for each topic card.
