    • By training, Hind Baydoun is an epidemiologist with a doctoral degree (PhD in Epidemiology) from the University of Iowa (since December of 2009), and prior to that, she had earned a Masters of Public Health (MPH, in 1998) and two Bachelor of Science degrees (BS Biology in 1993 and BS Nutrition & Dietetics in 1995) from the American University of Beirut. Currently, Hind is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Program in Public Health at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she teaches introductory and advanced coursework in Epidemiology, conducts independent and collaborative research as well as provides consulting services through the Epi-Bio core and serves on departmental and institution-wide committees. Over the years, Hind has developed diverse research interests as manifested in the broad range of topics: [1] perinatology, neonatology and pediatrics; [2] infertility; [3] cancer prevention; [4] violence, injuries and sexually transmitted diseases; [5] obesity, depression and cognitive function. Her 60+ peer-reviewed articles have been published in high-impact factor journals including American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Infection Control, American Journal of Hypertension, American Journal of Epidemiology, Annals of Epidemiology, BJU international, Clinical Cancer Research, Fertility and Sterility, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Nutrition, Neurobiology of aging, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Obesity Reviews and Psychosomatic medicine. So far, Hind’s publications have been cited over 300 times (See Scopus Search). She has 40+ presentations/posters at local, national and international meetings including American College of Epidemiology, Experimental Biology, Society for Epidemiologic Research, Society for Perinatal and Pediatric Epidemiologic Research and Women’s Health. She is also an active member of several professional societies including American College of Epidemiology, American Society for Nutrition, Society for Epidemiologic Research and Society for Perinatal and Pediatric Epidemiologic Research and has served as an ad-hoc reviewer of 20+ and an editorial board member of 2 public health and medical journals.

      Before joining the PhD program at the University of Iowa, Hind was actively involved in the design, implementation and dissemination of research projects by the National Collaborative Perinatal and Neonatal Network in Beirut, Lebanon. As a doctoral student, she was involved in management and analysis of data from two case-control studies, namely the Iowa Health in Pregnancy Study and the Study of Pregnancy Hypertension in Iowa. As a faculty member, Hind was the principal investigator on several research projects that required the collection of survey and medical records data on outcomes of assisted reproductive technologies, primary care and emergency department patients. Furthermore, she has experience with the analysis of national survey data, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring Surveys and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. In addition, she has collaborated with the National Institute on Aging on the analysis of two cohort studies, namely the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging and the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Lifespan Study. Her pre-doctoral, doctoral and post-doctoral experiences provided her the opportunity to learn and apply advanced statistical techniques, including complex survey design methods, meta-analysis and meta-regression receiver operator characteristic curve analysis, missing data analysis, longitudinal data analysis, factor analysis and structural equations modeling. Hind is currently proficient in the use of several statistical packages, including JMP, SAS, SPSS and STATA.

    • Joe Flannery joined Eastern Virginia Medical School as full time faculty in 2010, and serves as the Interim Program Director, Health Management and Policy Track Coordinator for the Joint EVMS/ODU Graduate Program in Public Health. He is also a faculty member and field surveyor for The Joint Commission. From 1993 to 2009 he served as a Director of Federal Programs, Director of Senior Services, and for five years as the first Executive Director of Patriots Colony at Williamsburg.  Mr. Flannery also served seven years from 2002 to 2009 as the Riverside Health System’s Corporate Compliance and Ethics Officer.

       A graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a B.S and M.S. in Health and Physical Education, He is also a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College. Mr. Flannery received his Masters in Health Care Administration from Baylor University. He completed his residency at the United States Military Academy, West Point in 1983.

      Mr. Flannery has thirty years of graduate teaching experience in health care and business management/leadership.

      Prior to joining EVMS, Mr. Flannery held senior positions for the Department of Defense’s Army Medical Department to include the first Director of Operations for TRICARE, and Chief of the Management Division for Health Services Command. He received the Department of Defense Superior Service Medal in 1993 and a Commanders Award for Public Service in 2002.

    • Jeff Johnson has worked in higher education for more than 30 years, and specifically in academic health centers during that entire time.  He was employed at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) from 1981-1991 in a variety of roles within the Eastern Virginia Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program, culminating in directing that program for several years.  The AHEC Program is a health workforce initiative designed to create partnerships between academic institutions and communities to address defined needs.  From 1991-2000 he was employed at Virginia Commonwealth University as part of the Virginia Statewide AHEC Program, and served as the director of that program for most of his tenure at VCU.  In 2000 Dr. Johnson returned to EVMS and has been closely involved with the overall management of educational programs that are part of the School of Health Professions.  In combination with prior AHEC activities, he has considerable experience with strategic planning, management, budgeting, operations, personnel, logistics, accreditation, and other aspects of higher education administration.  Throughout the majority of his career Dr. Johnson has held faculty appointments at either EVMS or VCU.

    • Linda Pautz, has over thirty years of experience in education, business management and hospital program administration. She has been an Education Director for Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC overseeing clinical rotations and educational outreach programs. While at Wake Medical Center, she was successful at receiving federal grants to support nursing programs for Hispanic and Latino populations in North Carolina.

      Higher education responsibilities included being the Vice President for Adult Degree Programs, North Carolina Wesleyan College. Here, she managed all of the college’s state-wide sites and over 120 faculty members. Her time at Old Dominion University was spent serving as the TELETECNET Regional Director for Virginia in which she supervised 15 sites and over 24 site directors and staff.

      Located at the Research Triangle Park in NC, Linda owned and operated a national consulting company specializing in teambuilding and corporate communications training.

      Throughout her career, Linda will tell you that she is fundamentally and foremost a teacher at heart. She continues to enjoy students and the classroom experience.

    • Dr. Brown is a native of Norfolk.  He attended the University of Richmond as an undergraduate and the University of Virginia for medical school.  He took a residency in Internal Medicine at Norfolk General Hospital and completed a Master of Public Health degree at Harvard University with a specialization in International Health and Nutrition.

      Dr. Brown’s career was concentrated for forty years in Africa.  There he worked both on the village level as well as on the national level of several African governments and the World Bank.  He has written extensively on major African health problems from primary village health care, hospital administration, epidemiology, childhood malnutrition, leprosy, river blindness and reproductive health.  Most recently he was on the forefront of the HIV/AIDS battle and he started one of the first comprehensive programs in Africa to confront this epidemic.

      On his return to the United States, Dr. Brown was appointed to the EVMS division of Infectious Diseases (Dept. of Internal Medicine) and to the visiting faculty of the Master of Public Health program.  Currently, he no longer practices clinical medicine, although he continues to lecture on Tropical Medicine and Global Health.

    • Dr. Buckley received his B.S. in Industrial Relations at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, his Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota, and his Doctorate in Health Administration from Kennedy Western University in California.

      In January 2005, he retired as President and CEO of the Chesapeake General Hospital and Chesapeake Health after thirty three years.  Prior to that he was Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, preceded  by administrative positions at hospitals in North Carolina and Virginia. He is currently President  Emeritus of the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

      He is currently Assistant Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the Program in Public Health and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Physicians for Peace. an international medical mission organization.

      He is married to Alvene and they have three grown children and four grandchildren.

    • Frances Dunn Butterfoss, PhD, is a health educator who brings over 20 years of experience in community collaboration. She is founder and President of Coalitions Work, a group that consults with practitioners on how to develop, sustain and evaluate coalitions for health promotion and disease prevention.  She holds professorships at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and teaches in their MPH program.  She is the founding director of the Consortium for Infant and Child Health (CINCH) and Project Immunize Virginia (PIV). Dr. Butterfoss has received research support from many federal and foundation grants and published widely in professional journals and textbooks. Her book, Coalitions and Partnerships in Community Health, is a best seller for academics and practitioners alike. Fran has served as Deputy Editor of Health Promotion Practice and President of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). Her awards include SOPHE’s Health Education Mentor (2002) & Distinguished Fellow (2012), EVMS’ Woman in Medicine & Science Professional Achievement (2004), YWCA of South Hampton Roads’ Woman of Distinction (2006) and Norman B. Arnold Alumni Award (2006). She completed undergraduate and masters’ degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in health promotion and education from the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina.
