Program Leadership
Ghent Family Medicine Residency Program Director
Sunil S. Menawat, MD
Dr. Menawat has been in graduate medical education for 15 years, but not always in Family Medicine. He graduated from West Virginia School of Medicine and completed a surgery residency at University of Florida and a two-year Academic Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Prior to 2003, he was teaching surgeons and heading the Division of Vascular Surgery at a large community hospital in Michigan.
Dr. Menawat chose Family Medicine when changes in his health did not allow him to be the best surgeon he could be. In 2007, he was recruited to start a brand new family medicine program at a small community hospital in Michigan. He completed their second site review in early 2012 before turning that program over to a capable group that had a large patient base in the area.
He joined the Ghent Family Medicine Program in October 2012. Dr. Menawat came because of its faculty and their vision of developing family physicians that can lead the specialty into its bright future. They have long seen the value, to the patient and to the overall health system, of a family doctor approach to healthcare that everyone is now beginning to recognize, he says.
