Barbecue showdown
cooks up support for diabetes research
May 30, 2008
The combination of good food and a
great cause drew hundreds to the 14th annual Cookout for the Cure, which
supports research at the EVMS Leonard R. Strelitz Diabetes Center.
Presented by the Hampton Roads Shipping
Association and the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), the
event sold about 1,200 tickets and raised approximately $50,000 for the
Diabetes Center's ongoing efforts to find new ways to treat and
eventually beat diabetes. Hampton Roads continues to grapple with a high
rate of diabetes, particularly in minority populations.
Aside from raising awareness of and
support for diabetes research, the 14 competing grill teams vied for
bragging rights. This year's category winners were:
- Best Poultry - Norfolk State
University
- Best Fish - ILA Local 1248
- Best Pork - Virginia Pipe Trades
- Best Beef - Hampton Roads Shipping
Association
- Best Dessert - ILA Local 970
- Best Sauce - ILA Local 846
- Best Gourmet - Hampton Roads
Shipping Association
- Best Side - ILA Local 1624
