Thank you for your comment! We are always working towards building stronger lines of communication and I appreciate you reaching out.

I wanted to address what you wrote about the student fundraising policy, as I know new policies can seem restrictive at first glance. We decided to do this to better coordinate all of the school’s fundraising efforts and to make sure we were not duplicating efforts—basically we don’t want groups of people barking up the same
fundraising/money tree.

Funneling all fundraising requests through the development office is an easy process, most requests get approved and we are better able to make sure that the event is well-promoted and hopefully well-attended.

We are working now to create handouts to more clearly explain the process. If you have any questions or have any suggestions, feel free to give me a call at 446.6070.

I think it's problematic to assume that no resources or funding are required to become the most community-oriented medical school in the nation. Volunteer opportunities take time and students are frequently glad to volunteer that. However, volunteer opportunities also take money to get off the ground and continue running. Students don't have this money and have decreasing opportunities and increasing difficulty in fundraising in part because of new institutional policies.
I am so glad that EVMS wants to continue a long tradition of community service and involvement, but I think to some extent having a key initiative of becoming the number one community oriented medical school in the nation will require more than just words on the part of the administration.

It's good to have core values in place for any place of employment. I find that even though they are set in place thaey are used but seldom, especially with upperlevel management and at times just the regular employees. Ms. Libby Valenti is a prime example of the core values set for EVMS. Maybe if others in Management/other positions would follow her lead it would be a lot better in the work place.
